On January 5, 2026, La Poste (the French postal service) will issue a booklet of twelve postage stamps featuring blue, a universal color symbolizing the sky, water, night, and infinity, which has inspired numerous artists throughout history and across all artistic movements.
From the blue of the sky to that of the sea, this color runs throughout the history of art. A symbol of peace, purity, and infinity, blue has inspired artists of all eras. This booklet of twelve stamps celebrates its many nuances. Yvaral's "Cubic Structure" evokes a space vibrant with light. Paul Klee, with "Blue Night," sets abstract forms dancing in a suspended universe. Vincent Van Gogh, master of deep blue, explores it in "The Starry Night" and "Almond Blossoms." Georges Lacombe's "Blue Seascape" and Carl Burckhardt's "Coastal Landscape" convey the soothing power of the seascape, while André Brasilier, in "Normandy Beach," captures its luminous poetry. René Magritte's meditations invite introspection, and Edgar Degas, with his Blue Dancers, evokes grace in motion. Sara Hayward, Leila Barton, and André Derain offer fresh, contemporary interpretations of these works.
