About 3000 years ago, the island of Vormsi rose from the sea, the “island of the serpent” of the Viking Orm, and has ever since been a place where ancient lore and the power of the sea intertwine. The first lighthouse was built here in 1864, but storms and busy shipping routes soon demanded a stronger beacon. Thus, in 1871, the white cast-iron lighthouse that still stands today was erected, guiding vessels through the mysterious shallows of Väinameri ever since. Its light has illuminated both the daily life of the coastal Swedes and the night journeys of sailors, becoming more than a navigational aid; it is the island’s timeless heart, carrying the ancient breath of Vormsi. In 2026, the Saxby Lighthouse marks 155 years since its first illumination, a beacon that links the island’s 3000-year-old origin story with the living maritime heritage of Estonia. It is for this reason that it rightfully belongs to the lighthouse stamp series regarded as one of the crown jewels of Estonian philately.
