Makarije ot Černije Gori (around 1463 - after 1533) was the first Montenegrin and the first South Slavic printer of books in Cyrillic alphabet. He learned the craft of printing in Venice, and he was the main typographer in Crnojević printing press. The Crnojević printing press (in the period from 1493 to 1496) produced 6 books, and all of them were prepared, put together and printed by the hieromonk Makarije. He left Montenegro in 1496 together with Đurđe Crnojević and then went to Vlaška because Ana, Ivan Crnojević’s daughter, was married to the Duke of Vlaška, Radule. He was the founder of Romanian printing. Books from Crnojević printing press are among the most beautiful European incunabula (early printed books) printed until 1500. The sculptor Gržetić made the bust of Makarije which is now placed in the Central Library of Montenegro “Đurđe Crnojević” in Cetinje. The Montenegro Post is publishing a commemorative postage stamp named Printer Makarije within the edition Historical Heritage. The author of the conceptual design is Zoran Popović, a graphic designer from Podgorica.
