About 550 Years Since the Birth of Bozidar Vukovic Podgoričanin

OZIDAR VUKOVIC PODGORICANIN was born in Djurici near Podgorica in about 1460 year and he died in Venice in about 1540 year. He is a famous Montenegrin duke and printer. He was a senior state officer - Logothete, i.e. a chief scribe and the Head of State's office at the court of Ivan Crnojevic in Cetinje. After Zeta fell under Ottoman rule he set off to Venice where he first engaged in trade. In 1517 he founded his own printing-shop, the first of Cyrillic in the capital city of the Venetian Republic. Continuing the tradition of the Crnojevic printing-shop, Bozidar Vukovic published nine books in his printing-shop in the period from 1518 year to 1540 year: Psaltir s posledovanjem, Molitvenik, Oktoih petoglasnik, Praznični minej, Zbornik and others. He is a chief editor, publisher and a printer at the same time. Habsburg Emperor Charles V awarded Bozidar Vukovic a Title of Nobility of the Holy Roman Empire. After his death, respecting his Platonic will, his son Vincenzo conveyed his body to the monastery of St.Virgin in Starcevo, Skadar Lake. He printed books on parchment, taking into account the quality of illustration. Books from this printing-shop affected the graphic equipment of Romanian, Russian and Greek books. Post of Montenegro, on the occasion of Bozidar Vukovic - Podgoricanin’s 550th Birth Anniversary, publishes appropriate edition of stamps that contains one stamp and an Envelope on the first day. Author of the preliminary design is Ana Matic, a graphic designer from Podgorica.
