About Maritime Navigation School in Perast

Maritime navigation school was opened at the end of the 17th century (after 1686), in his home town of Perast, by a famous captain from Boka, shipbuilder and lecturer Marko Martinović, following the family tradition and the tradition in Boka. Among his students were many famous people of the time. First of all, one of its graduates was the fellow fighter of the Russian Emperor Peter the Great, the future Russian Ambassador in Constantinople, Peter Alekseyevich Tolstoy (1645-1729), as well as a famous citizen of Perast, the first Montenegrin admiral of the Russian fleet Matija Krstov Zmajević (1680-1735), known in Russia as Matvey Hristiforovič Zmajević. Captain Marko Martinović had four sons and was the founder of the Martinović dynasty of seafarers. He died on 28 October 1716.
