The Nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) is a venomous snake widely distributed throughout Europe, the red variant of which occurs in Montenegro. This extremely rare phenomenon, known as erythrism, can also be found in other animal species and results from a confluence of various habitat-related factors. The red Nose-horned Viper is targeted for exploitation by unscrupulous snake collectors because of its colour and exceptional beauty.
