The brown bear (Ursus arctos) inhabits mountainous parts of Europe.Although brown bears are omnivorous, they favour food of plant origin.They are most active in the evening and at night, and construct dens in caves, old hollow trees or under piles of branches. They go into a sort of sleep throughout the winter from which they can easily be awakened. Most brown bears are about 2 metres tall and weigh 130–300 kg. Typically, the males live alone, while females with cubs are strongly territorial.
