About Protection of Nature Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos)

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) inhabits mountainous parts of Europe.Although brown bears are omnivorous, they favour food of plant origin. They are most active in the evening and at night, and construct dens in caves, old hollow trees or under piles of branches. They go into a sort of sleep throughout the winter from which they can easily be awakened. Most brown bears are about 2 metres tall and weigh 130–300 kg. Typically, the males live alone, while females with cubs are strongly territorial.

Females give birth to between one and four cubs, which are born blind and furless and weigh about 350 grams. In Montenegro, a permanent ban on hunting protects mother bears and cubs up to two years of age, while male and female bears without cubs are protected during the closed season.Montenegro post is issuing a commemorative postage stamp and first-day cover as part of the “Protection of nature – Brown bear (Ursus arctos)” edition.
