Queen Milena Petrović Njegoš
Princess and future Queen Milena Petrović Njegoš, née Vukotić, was the consort of Nicholas I, ruler of Montenegro. She was born in Čevo in 1847.Milena married the young Prince Nikola in 1860 and remained princess until 1910, when she became queen. She was well-known for her humanitarian efforts and benevolence towards her subjects.The royal couple, Nikola and Milena, had twelve children – nine daughters and three sons.After Nikola’s death in exile in 1921 on Cap d′ Antibes, Milena served as the regent of the royal government until her death (1921–1923).Montenegro Post is issuing a commemorative postage stamp and first day cover as part of the Historical heritage Queen Milena Petrović Njegoš edition.
