About Nature Protection Mediterranean Monk Seal

Mediterranean monk seals are pinniped mammals, from the family of true seals (Phocidae). They are the sole representative of the genus Monachus.

On average, individuals reach lengths of up to 2.4 metres. Their bodies are covered in short, dark fur, which in males is typically black, and in females is brown to dark-grey, with a lighter patch on the belly.

These seals predominantly inhabit shallow coastal waters. However, since the 20th century, most likely due to human activity, they have completely changed their habitat, retreating into inaccessible sea caves.

There is probably no permanent population in the Adriatic, with those individuals that have been sighted likely originating from the Ionian Sea.

The monk seal is considered the rarest pinniped species and ranks among the most endangered mammals in the world. It is protected by international and national legislation.

Montenegro Post is publishing a commemorative postage stamp and a first day cover as part of the Nature Protection – Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) edition.
