Ilija Plamenac was a Montenegrin duke, senator, minister of defense and one of the closest associates of Prince (King) Nikola I Petrovic Njegoš. As a young man, he received the priesthood. At the beginning of the reign of Prince Danilo, he became a tribal captain.

Prince Nikola appointed him a member of the Senate and at the same time gave him the title of duke.Duke Ilija Plamenac played an important role in the reorganization and modernization of the Montenegrin army.He took part in the battle of Fundina with his detachment.
