About Flora - Rush Broom

Flora Rush Broom (Spartium junceum)

Rush Broom is a perennial deciduous shrub belonging to the pea family (Fabaceae), reaching a height of up to three meters. It thrives in direct sunlight and is often found in coastal habitats, along forest edges and roads, across the entire Mediterranean region. From ancient times, its round hollow branches were used to make ropes, of which baskets, brooms, carpets, clothes, fishing nets were made, while its flowers were used to make yellow color, to dye wool, linen and cotton. The Latin name Spartium (Gr. Spartion - rope) given to the genus, was selected due to rush broom’s flexible branches, strong fibers and application in cordage. Montenegro Post, within the edition “Flora - Rush Broom (Spartium junceum)”, publishes a commemorative stamp and the first day cover.Design by: Romana Pehar, a painter from Kotor
