About Popular Festivals - April Fair Seville

Seville is famous throughout the world for its streets, its people and its culture, but if there is something that goes beyond its borders it is its well-known April Fair.

Created in 1847 as a livestock fair, over time the festive aspect of the event ended up prevailing over the commercial part, until it became an essential event for the people of Seville.

During the week in which the fair takes place, locals and strangers visit the more than a thousand booths installed in the fairgrounds, becoming a space to share and have fun.

Officially, the party begins on Monday at midnight with the “lighting test”, the lighting of the thousands of colored light bulbs in the fairgrounds and the main doorway, which is different every year.

The booths, made up of various partners, are the meeting point for families and friends, where typical Seville and Andalusian gastronomy is shared and where music, especially sevillanas, plays until the wee hours of the morning. Another of the most characteristic elements of those days are the typical costumes that flood the fairgrounds with color.

Horses are also protagonists in these celebrations. During the day, the fair is filled with hundreds of Amazons, riders and richly decorated carriages, in the so-called horse ride.

Known as "Calle del Infierno", it is the area where numerous attractions for children and adults are located and the stalls where you can enjoy food, drinks or sweets.

Another essential element are the bulls with the Plaza de la Maestranza as the protagonist.

This week full of joy and celebration comes to an end with an impressive fireworks display, in charge of closing the fair, although only until the following year, when the lights, colors and festive atmosphere will once again star in one of the most important weeks. of the Sevillian capital, along with its monumental Holy Week.

The stamp issued by Correos is illustrated with the design of the Cover that gives access to the fairgrounds, designed to celebrate the Fair of this 2023.
