About 400 Years Since the Birth of St. V. Ostroškog

Vasilije Jovanovic, St. Vasilije of Ostrog (Mrkonjici, Popovo Polje 1610 - Ostrog 1671) was consecrated as Bishop in 1638 year and appointed as Metropolitan of the Archbishopric of Herzegovina that was situated in Tvrdos. Because of the participation in the war against the Turks he and his parishioners moved to Rudo Polje, close to Niksic. Since the threat of the Turkish government did not cease, Vasilije took refuge in the monastery of Ostrog in 1650 year and stayed there until the end of his life. Metropolitan Vasilije rebuilt the Church of the Holy Virgin, and then he built the monastery under the cliff of Ostrog - the Church of the Holy Cross in the cliff of Ostrog. Shrine of St. Vasilije of Ostrog, the Miracle Worker and Montenegrin saint, is located in the Church of the Presentation of the Holy Virgin. Because of the cult of St. Vasilije and his deeds, believers of all religions from Montenegro pilgrim this shrine, and so do those from nearby and distant surroundings. Montenegro Post, on the occasion of 400 years of the birth of Saint Vasilije of Ostrog, publishes the appropriate edition of post stamps, which contains one post stamp, one maximum card and an Envelope on the first day. Author of the conceptually design is Djordjije Radevic from Podgorica.
